Light & Life in the Middle Hills

9781910500422April 2016 saw the launch of Johnny’s new book – Light & Life in the Middle Hills.  This photographic collection documents the characters and lives of those who live in the shadow of the Himalayas; often in complete austerity and poverty.  It includes some former Gurkhas, and Joanna Lumley wrote the foreword.

Johnny has been visiting Nepal for 15 years and lived for 2 years in Pokhara.  He continues to visit frequently, running photographic adventures through his travel photography workshops – photoJourney.  In 2015 he was asked by the Gurkha Welfare Trust to record in photographs the villages at the epicentre of the devastating Earthquake a week after it hit Nepal.

The book therefore includes some of those images and  documents the destruction and effect on the lives of those living in those middle hills immediately after the earthquake.

In May 2016, Johnny appeared on Midweek as one of the four panellist guests to talk about his book with Libby Purves.  The broadcast can be heard here: Midweek

Following the launch, Johnny was also asked to write an article for the Daily Telegraph on what it is like serving with Gurkha Soldiers.  This can be read here: 10 things no one tells you before you join the Gurkhas

What some have said:

“I wanted to add a personal note of congratulation on an excellent production. There has been a long line of books written by those who profess to know Nepal and its debilitating poverty. I think your book seats easily on the top of the pile. Well Done.” Former Commander British Gurkhas and Defence Attache, Nepal.

“Wow! that was a night! I have NEVER seen books fly off the table like that, a testament to you and your stunning photographs and excellent guests. It was such fun and I loved meeting everyone…Thank you so, so much dear Johnny, for being the best of the very best.” Joanna Lumley (on the 25 April book launch)

“That you love and have an affinity with Nepal leaps from these pages. You document both a personal narrative and way of seeing that renders the reader with untold stories amidst the spirit, beauty and fortitude of the Nepalese who live such incredibly tough lives in the Middle Hills.”  Jacqui Betts

“Just home from a weekend up in Bandar (Brunei) and arrived to your parcel with the copies of ‘Light and Life in the middle hills’. What a stunning collection of photographs – showing our Gurkha homelands and people. We will enjoy looking at these for some time.” Captain Charles Russell, Adjutant, 1st Battalion, the Royal Gurkha Rifles

“The book arrived today and is awesome. It certainly takes me back to my last trip to Nepal and draws me back to return once more.” Neil Sanderson, Australia

“The book has arrived safely for which I am most grateful. I was most impressed with the photographs, a fine balance of portraits, landscapes, post-earthquake scenarios” Hugh McLean
