British Army Recruiting

I had expected for this blog to reflect my expedition to the Arctic which finished last week, but the day after I returned, I was employed by Capita at the first stages of their new recruiting campaigns on behalf of the British Army.  (I received the request via 3G at base-camp below one of the glaciers we were exploring!)

The first of these recruiting shoots was in Blandford to represent some of the various trades that will be recruited to fit the bill for Army numbers for the future.  My images are being accompanied by a multi-platform video campaign via social media, and it was great to work with the team pulling that aspect together.

We started with some images of various high tech signals vehicles being deployed in the field, before moving to a school environment where junior soldiers were being taught cabling and fibre-optic deployments.  I wanted the images to all have a similar feel, so I avoided flash completely and relied wholly on ambient light.  When the light was low I just used my 85mm fixed lens at f1.4. REALLY love that lens.

We then moved outside to photograph the deployment of some smaller signals gear, and then headed to an exercise location to see everything in operation.

Finally, we were back at the HQ for head-shots for some of the soldiers being who have been targeting the recruiting aspects.

A very enjoyable day – really testing skills to capture interesting images commercially for use in recruiting scenarios.  Although I carried lights with me at all times, I relished the challenge of keeping the shoot “ambient”.
